Summary: Whilst the pub and restaurant parts of The Royal have been recently refurbished and are very nice, the same cannot be said for the hotel part. It is very dated, shabby and in desperate need of refurbishment. There are steep narrow stairs up to the accommodation so totally unsuitable for anybody with access needs. The room was clean despite the issues with dated fittings. The door handle was like some kind of Chinese puzzle and generally took about 5mins to lock from either side. In our room, we had 2 very old dirty secondary double glazed windows which would not open at all. The heated towel rail in the bathroom was permanently on and impossible to turn off making the room like a sauna when the bathroom door was open, which may be nice in winter but was intolerable on a hot July night. To make matters worse, they provided a small electric fan which was so noisy as to make it unusable if you were trying to sleep. We stayed there two nights so asked for the fan to be changed and the heated towel rail to be fixed so it could be turned off but neither was done. The other main problem was, even if we had been given a quieter fan, it would have been pointless as the thumping repetitive beats of the night club held in the pub on Friday and Saturday nights went on until 2am were so loud they may have well just set up a speaker right outside our door. The only upside was the staff who were generally friendly and helpful even though they failed to remedy the issues with the room.
