Positive: Slade cottage is at the end of a private drive where there is another rental and a shepherds hut in its own area. very private if you are the only ones staying. Garden is beautiful. Host was pleasant. house is big, has 5 bedrooms so can accommodate a large group.
Negative: We rented the Hen house and also shepherds hut at the same time. We had a family wedding so all stayed together. the gardens are ornate and are open for charity. Twice while we there there were people milling around so were encouraged not to use the garden. We were able to take our two dogs, we couldn't let them out into the garden without leads, so we couldn't leave doors open, constantly on edge as we were in and out a lot! it was lovely hot week it spoiled it really. The house was clean, old and a bit shabby, some areas smell damp. (the Hen House is much nicer). The Shepherds Hut is nice, very well designed except there is no toilet or washing/shower facilities near to it, so really just a camp in the garden, no good if you need the loo at night. No bbq allowed in garden, although on listing this is advertised, we took our own and had to use it outside the front door in a small yard. with 17 of us altogether we had a few vehicles as we hail from different areas. This was also an issue for the owner, too many vehicles. we were asked to move them. No music outside allowed either. We were on holiday but felt that we couldn't relax. The gardens are amazing but seem to take precedent over the paying guests. We sat out in the garden during the day a couple of times but felt like we were on show. The house could do with having its own private garden area. We booked through booking.com Tuesday to Saturday. Sykes Cottages contacted us to cancel the booking as we could only book Monday to Monday, we ended up paying for days we didn't need. This needs to be made clear on booking too, we had so many emails from Booking.com and Sykes with conflicting days/dates and cost!
Summary: Beautiful location - too many restrictions, wouldn't book again.
