Positive: Kathleen and Curtis went above and beyond to make our stay full of ease and simplicity. I can't say enough about both of them and their place - 12 out of 10 stars. They both come from hospitality and provide a wonderful mix of attentive/caring but unobtrusive presence and attention. Any questions I had were answered immediately and anything that we needed arrived from upstairs with a friendly delivery and a dose of humour. Both hosts are well connected in the community - you should ask about the nearby bakery that Kathleen's sister owns -- "chee" (cheese) bread is delicious! I arrived by myself (both my parent's flights were delayed for weather) and 4 hours late. Kathleen checked to see if I needed anything while I was waiting on the tarmac in Toronto and then chased down my car rental to let them know that I was going to be late -- exactly what I needed in the middle of the stressful snowstorm in Toronto. She then kept track of me while I drove through St. John in the dark and on the other side of the road (which was less hair-raising than you might imagine but definitely had it's moments in the driving rain, getting lost (my fault), car eating potholes and back street dogs). Jennings was delightful in contrast. Her husband Curtis was waiting outside to show me where to park when I arrived despite the fact that it was around bedtime. The location is absolutely FANTASTIC. You are far enough up off the main highway that you don't hear any noise from it -- and undeveloped fields just above the house so generally very quiet. You are also less than a 5 minute drive away from my FAVOURITE beach on all of Antigua -- the little known Hermitage Beach which you share with the Hermitage Resort, but which seems to have few, if any guests actually using the beach (over the course of 10 days I think we may have seen 5 or 6 guests on the beach).
Negative: I honestly don't have anything to critique. The hosts have used high quality furnishings, kitchen accessories and have really thought about everything. The place is set up in a modular way so that we could put two single beds together to make a king bed for my parents and there are good quality TVs with excellent WIFI service in each room. Beds are comfy, pillows of all sizes and softness also available. And you have the option of opening windows and getting a breeze or putting on the fantastically efficient heat pump air conditioners in each room. They have really gone the extra mile so that each guest room can manage their environment to their preferences. I converted one of the bedrooms into my office so that I could do some work while I was there as well. The only thing we changed while we were there was the placement of the couch and the dining table which made the whole kitchen/living room feel even more roomy and engaging. As far as location, you are ~25 min from the airport and ~40 min from English Harbour. The drive to English Harbour along the southern beach road and then up FigTree Drive was one of the highlights of the trip other than Hermitage Beach. Such a relaxed, friendly, safe, warm and easy to visit island, beautifully anchored by our stay at Sylmars. Wish we could have spent more time here!
