Maison Provost - 18th Century Home | House in Barneville-Carteret

This house belonged to Jeanne Provost, film and theatre actress (Comédie Française) 1920's to 1965. The house is located on a quiet street right by the center of town. There is a garden that faces the sea with views of the island of Jersey. Upstairs there are five bedrooms and two bathrooms. Downstairs there is a living room, a small den, kitchen, and dining room. There is also an additional bathroom with shower in the garage (great for washing off after a beach outing). All of the rooms are decorated with antiques. Every room has French windows which open to the garden, the terrace, and a view of the sea, including the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. The sea is 3 km (1 mi) away. There are two main beaches: Barneville and Carteret with miles of dunes and open beaches for strolling. Trekking is very popular in the area. There are several small towns close by for visiting as well as lovely drives up the coast to Cherbourg and around the other side of the peninsula to the WWII beaches (Utah Beach), St. Mere Eglise, Caen. For the history buff, there are many excellent museums in the area for day trips.
As we do not have central heat, in the winter, we will only rent out some rooms which will use radiators. We do have a wood stove now in the dining area which heats the kitchen and dining area and petit salon. Blue Room, Yellow Room, Rose Room, and Provost room. The salon will not be used, but there is a dining room and the den as well as a kitchen. The terrace and gardens are also open. The bathrooms also have heaters. NOTE: this is an older home with limited modern amenities. Kitchen is equipped. Bathrooms are functional. The bedding is new with duvet covers. The house has original furnishings so is a period piece. You must like older homes to stay here: some dust, some drafts, maybe a whiff of mustiness downstairs, but lots of character. We have installed new vinyl windows to withstand the Normandy storms. If you are near the ocean, there is wind, rain, and fantastic air quality. Open a window on a clear day and you will see Jersey Island.

Prior residents and guests include church clergy, German soldiers during WW2, an English aviator hidden in the attic, a French actress in the Comedie Francaise (1900-1969), and families of a French general. The house is now owned by the family of the actress.
